Designing a Prayer Space in Your Home

I love when certain areas in my home signify special moments or activities for myself or my family—and my prayer space is at the top of my list.

Why design a prayer space?

Sometimes, one of the most important reasons to create a special prayer spot is to take advantage of a distraction-free environment. For me, the location or set-up for prayer and reading doesn’t have to be anything out of the ordinary—just having a designated spot feels familiar and comforting.

Favorite places to set up a prayer spot?

If it’s cozy and feels relaxing, I think just about anywhere around the house is a good location. For me, my prayer space is on my family room couch! A quiet corner in a bedroom, in a study, or even on a covered porch are all perfect places to spend time in prayer and reflection—the most important element is a willing, open heart.

Is there anything you leave in your prayer place day after day?

I like to keep my Bible, Bible study lessons, a pen, and my journal in my prayer spot, all of which I store in a basket that I can easily slide underneath the coffee table. Once I’m finished, I can put it all away and I always know where to find everything.

Sometimes, I light one of my favorite candles. Since I get up early for my prayer time, a strong cup of coffee is also an essential for me!

A favorite journal?

I really love the “Give Me Jesus” journal from Well Watered Women Co.

Special ways to host a prayer time or Bible study gathering with friends?

Most importantly, guests want to feel welcomed and safe when they come over for Bible study and prayer. Candles, blankets people can curl up with on the couch, and comfortable places to sit help guests feel at home and at ease. And no gathering is complete without a tray of light snacks!

I once hosted a group of women on my back patio for prayer and Bible study. The weather had recently cooled off and I lit our outdoor fireplace. We had plenty of seating and every guest brought a snack to share. The result was a really relaxed, inviting environment—and a sweet, memorable evening.
